Union Minister for Communication and Information technology Ravi Shankar Prasad launched two mega projects in Andhra Pradesh on Thursday. The minister laid the foundation of Society for Applied Microwave Electronic Engineering & Research (Sameer) Center in Vishakhapatnam. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Union Minister for Urban Development and Housing M Venkaiah Naidu were present in the ceremony.
The ministers was also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up a IT incubation centre at Siripuram Junction in Vizag city which will be jointly developed by the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) and the Software Technology Park of India (STPI). The cost of the incubation centre is estimated at around Rs. 62 crore.
SAMEER, a center for Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3), is an autonomous R&D institution under Department of Electronics and Information & Technology, Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. It will be set up in an area of 30 acres at a cost of Rs. 80 crore.
The centre operates through its headquarters in Mumbai and the Vizag unit will be the fourth R&D complex, while other three are located at Guwahati, Chennai and Kolkata. The Vizag Centre is being equipped with highly specialized facilities including Electromagnetic pulse (EMP), Pulse Current Injection (PCI), and Ultra-Wide Band (UWB), EMI/EMC test facilities.
According to the official release, the Visakhapatnam centre for EMI/EMC/EMP facility in the vicinity of Visakhapatnam would benefit a number of vendors on the East Coast as well as the Indian Navy.
