Samsung India Electronics has been awarded the prestigious ‘Golden Peacock Award for Corporate Social Responsibility 2014’ for its path-breaking initiatives in the areas of children’s education and skill development. The Award recognizes the company’s efforts to offer quality education opportunities to disadvantaged children and youth through the ‘Samsung Smart Class’ and ‘Samsung Technical Schools’ set up across the country.
The award was given away by The Rt. Hon. Baroness Verma, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Ministry of Energy & Climate Change, Government of UK at a ceremony in Mumbai on January 19.
Receiving the Award, H.W. Bang, Senior Vice President of Samsung South West Asia said, “We are delighted to be conferred with the prestigious Golden Peacock award on Corporate Social Responsibility. It is a reflection of our sustained commitment to address societal needs and challenges and leverage our expertise as the world's leading consumer electronics company.”
Rajiv Mishra, Vice President, Media & Head of CSR, Samsung India Electronics, added, “Samsung’s CSR initiatives are implemented in close partnership with government departments. Samsung Smart Classes have been set up in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas across the country and are equipped with Samsung Smart board and laptops to enable students learn in a digital, interactive environment.”
Samsung Technical Schools, on the other hand, have been set up in collaboration with the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and Departments of Technical Education in states such as Delhi and West Bengal. The Technical Schools enable youth to gain technical skills that will equip them to seek job opportunities in the growing consumer electronics manufacturing and service sector. As of December 2014, 15 Technical Schools are operational.
The Golden Peacock Awards are bestowed annually under various categories since 1991 and are recognised worldwide as the hallmark of corporate excellence in areas of innovation, quality, training, governance, environment management and corporate social responsibility. The rigorous selection process includes expert evaluation of applications by members from various sectors, benchmarking against best management practices, site visits and presentations from the shortlisted organisations.
