NEC to deliver facial recognition system to South Australia Police

NEC Australia has bagged an IT deal to deliver South Australia Police’s facial recognition system to support forensic, investigative and front-line policing operations.

NEC says the facial recognition technology — based on its NeoFace facial recognition software — will help South Australia Police solve crimes faster, apprehend criminals earlier, and assist with criminal investigations, including searching for missing persons more efficiently.

NEC said its facial recognition technology enables police to monitor, scan, detect and search images of suspects, poor quality photographs and video streams, for matches against mugshot databases.

“The strength of NEC’s NeoFace technology lies in its tolerance of poor quality images and surveillance video, which allows law enforcement authorities to use evidence previously considered of little or no value in order to achieve higher rates of identification,” said Mike Barber, chief operating officer of NEC Australia.

South Australia Police can integrate the facial recognition system with other biometric technologies and core policing systems.

NEC has deployed its finger scanning and facial recognition technology in over 70 countries for law enforcement agencies and large enterprises.

In July 2015, NEC announced its selection by the Receita Federal, Brazilian National Tax Collection Agency, to provide NeoFace Watch facial recognition technology for 14 international airports throughout Brazil to enhance the efficiency of customs procedures.
